Today a 3 judge panel of the Federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals issued an Injunction enjoining Governor Andy Beshear from trying to criminalize church services during Covid-19.
On Easter weekend Kentucky State Police arrived in the parking lot of the Maryville Baptist Church in Bullitt County and issued notices to the congregants that their attendance, whether in the church or outdoors, amounted to a criminal act. The officers recorded congregants’ license plate numbers and sent letters to vehicle owners requiring them to self-quarantine for 14 days or be subject to further sanction.
The Injunction states: [A]t this point and in this place, the unexplained breadth of the ban on religious services, together with its haven for numerous secular exceptions, cannot co-exist with a society that places religious freedom in a place of honor in the Bill of Rights: the First Amendment.
